How to Choose a Good Restaurant in Sri Lanka: A Simple Checklist

A good meal starts before you sit down. This short checklist helps you pick a restaurant in Sri Lanka with fewer surprises, whether you are choosing a quick lunch or a table for a group.

Start with the menu

  • Look for a current menu with prices. A restaurant that shows its menu online usually keeps it up to date and is confident about its prices.
  • A short, focused menu often means the kitchen does a few things well. A very long menu can be a warning sign, although it depends on the type of restaurant.
  • Check that the dishes match what you want: spice level, vegetarian or halal options, and whether there are dishes for children.

Check the basics

  • Opening hours. Confirm them for the day you are going, because some places close between lunch and dinner or change their hours on public holidays.
  • Poya days. On full moon Poya days some restaurants close or do not serve alcohol, so check ahead if that matters to you.
  • Location and parking. A quick look at the map saves time, especially in busy areas of Colombo.
  • Reservations. For weekends, holidays and groups, call or message ahead to book a table.

Read reviews the smart way

  • Prefer recent reviews. Restaurants change owners, chefs and menus.
  • Look for patterns instead of single opinions. If several people mention slow service or a dish they loved, that is useful.
  • Check guest photos as well as the restaurant's own. They show real portions and the actual dining room.

Match the place to the occasion

  • A quick lunch: look for a short menu, fast service and a central location.
  • A family meal: check for space, high chairs and dishes everyone can eat.
  • A celebration or a larger group: book ahead and ask about seating and any set menus.
  • A first date or a quiet talk: ask about noise levels and whether tables are close together.

Before you pay

  • Look for the service charge and taxes at the bottom of the menu. They are often added to the bill.
  • Ask which payment methods are accepted. Cards are common in city restaurants, but carry some cash for smaller places.
  • Check the price is in rupees and whether it includes the items you expect.

Use TableTalk to look before you go

TableTalk lists restaurants with their menus and prices, so you can see what is on offer before you visit. Browse by city or cuisine and pick a place that suits your meal.
